UAB Completes Comeback, Defeats UTSA 54-53

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team erased a 15-point first half deficit and roared back in the fourth quarter to defeat UTSA 54-53 on Sunday afternoon at Bartow Arena.
The Blazers (14-4, 5-1 AAC) trailed UTSA (10-8, 4-3 AAC) for the first 33 minutes of the contest and did not take their first lead of the game until 5:15 remaining in the fourth when Denim DeShields scored two of her game-high 22 points to give UAB a 47-45 lead.
From there, the lead would only change one more time as DeShields took over down the stretch, scoring 10 of UAB's final 11 points. With UTSA trailing by three in the final seconds, the Roadrunners had a game-tying 3-point attempt which was no good. UTSA put back the offensive rebound as time expired which gave the Blazers a 1-point victory.
The Blazers used an 11-0 run to end the third and begin the fourth which got UAB back into the game. UAB trailed by 15 early in the second quarter (25-10) and was down by 10 at halftime (31-21).
UAB shot just 31.4 percent for the game, but converted when it mattered most, shooting 53 percent in the final quarter.
DeShields was the only Blazer in double figures and notched her fourth 20+ point game of the season while adding a team-high seven rebounds. UTSA had three players share a team-high 11 points in the loss, which snapped its four-game winning streak.
The win keeps UAB remained tied for first place in the AAC standings and UAB has already matched its win total from all of last season.
The Blazers now hit the road for a contest at Wichita State on Thursday night at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
