SERIES HISTORY
The Blazers lead the all-time series 24-13, including a 12-7 record at Bartow Arena. Tulane won the last meeting between the two programs in 2014.
LAST TIME OUT
UAB fell to No. 24 Florida Atlantic on Sunday afternoon by a score of 86-73. The Blazers trailed by 19 at the half and Owls held off UAB's comeback attempt in the final minutes. Eric Gaines and Efrem "Butta" Johnson each added 13 points for the Blazers.
STEPPING UP
Highlight-reel plays marked Eric Gaines' first season in Birmingham with two SportsCenter Top Ten appearances and numerous high-flying dunks. After averaging 11.5 points and 4.3 assists per game, Gaines will play an even larger role as the only returning player to average double-digit points per game last season. The Almanac named Eric Gaines as its Preseason AAC Player of the Year heading into the season, citing his talent on both ends of the floor. Gaines has upped his scoring numbers while maintaining his defensive prowess early in the season for UAB, averaging 12.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.5 steals per game.
MAKING AN IMPACT
Daniel Ortiz has begun to find his rhythm on the UAB roster. The North Alabama transfer scored only nine points over the first five games but has since averaged 10.8 points over the last 11 games. Ortiz hit a clutch go-ahead three with four seconds to go in regulation in the Blazers' win over Drake. Ortiz also surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his collegiate career in UAB's win over Montevallo.
PROTECTING THE RIM
The Blazers have blocked 73 shots over their first 16 games of the season, led by Yaxel Lendeborg with 36 rejections. UAB blocked at least five shots in four straight games from Nov. 12-25, its longest such streak since the 2015-16 season. Nine different players have blocked at least one shot this season.
