UAB Volleyball Falls to South Alabama

MOBILE – UAB Volleyball fell to the South Alabama Jaguars 1-3 in the Alabama Showdown on Saturday. The Blazers sit at a record of 2-10 overall.
Two Blazers finished with double-digit kills on the day. The team totaled a collective 46 kills and six blocks, along with five aces on the day.
IN THE SETS
The first set saw UAB jump out to an early 5-3 lead, with the Blazers advancing off attack errors to maintain the lead. South Alabama found an opening, going on a three-point run advancing the score to 18-15 in favor of the Jaguars. USA maintained the lead for the duration of the set, taking the first 25-19.
In set two, the Blazers and Jaguars remained in close quarters before a three-point run put USA in front. The Green and Gold would trail for the remainder of the set, broken up between points with kills from Mia Reese to tie the score. South Alabama went on to go on two scoring runs to secure the second set 25-19.
The Blazers entered set three on an offensive and defensive front that proved favorable for the Green and Gold. Reese and Smith were the point of emphasis, delivering a series of kills to advance the lead to 15-11. The Blazers never gave up the lead, advancing to a six-point lead after a setters dump from Lidya Canturk. The Green and Gold maintained the lead and won the set, 25-19 following a bad set from USA.
Set four saw South Alabama jump to a 3-1 lead before extending it to 10-2. The Blazers got within five after an ace and back-to-back kills from Mia Reese. UAB would then get within three before a kill from USA halted the three-point run. The Blazers continued to trail by as much as eight before UAB took advantage of two errors that put the Blazers within six. The Green and Gold held USA to a match point for three tries before the Jaguars took the match, 25-20.
IN THE BOX
- The Blazers had two ladies finish with double-digit kills: Mia Reese and Kelsey Smith. This is the second consecutive match Smith and Reese finished in double-digits in kills.
- Chloe Rodriguez finished with eight kills and a .636 hitting percentage.
- Lidya Canturk finished with 40 assists.
- As a team, the Blazers forced 20 errors from South Alabama.
- UAB finished with a hitting percentage of .201 to USA's .273.

The Blazers return to the road on Wednesday, Sept 20 to Houston to play the Rice Owls at 6 PM.
