Men’s Golf Earns Co-Championship in Opening Tournament of 2023-24

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's golf team opened the 2023-24 season in style by being crowned Co-Champions at the Argent Financial Classic hosted by Louisiana Tech in Choudrant, La.
The three-day tournament concluded on Tuesday with UAB shooting its lowest round of the event with a collective 282. The Blazers moved up five spots as a team on the final day of action and finished in a tie for first place with Louisiana and Southern Miss at -9.
Khavish Varadan, who enters his senior year with the third lowest stroke average in school history, started off his season with a statement as he finished in a tie for second place overall at -11.
After shooting par (72) in the opening round, Varadan caught fire by shooting 68 (-4) in the second round, followed by a bogey-free 65 (-7) in the final round. Varadan had 16 birdies in his three rounds combined.
Sophomore John Bruce was UAB's second finisher as he tied for 23rd overall at even par (71-71-74 = 216). His older brother Paul Bruce was two shots behind him (73-73-72 = 218, +2) and he tied for 33rd overall.
A one-under 71 for freshman Will Stelt in the final round moved him up 15 spots into a tie for 39th overall at +3. Stelt shot 74-74-71 in his first collegiate tournament.
Garrison Guthrie rounded out UAB's efforts with a 52nd place finish (76-71-74 = 221, +5), while freshman Trace Bracknell played as an individual and shot a 76 in all three rounds for a 79th place finish.
The Blazers look to keep their momentum going in two weeks when they host the Graeme McDowell Invitational at Limestone Springs in Oneonta, Ala., Sept. 24-26.
