Volleyball Travels to the Windy City for the 2023 UIC Invite

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Volleyball (1-2, 0-0 AAC) travels to the Windy City, where they'll compete in the UIC Invitational on September 1 and 2, 2023. The Invitational welcomes the Blazers, Western Michigan, SIUE and tournament host UIC.
The Green and Gold comes off a full weekend of volleyball in the UAB Invitational, where they played fifteen sets over three days. The Blazers begin their first matches of the weekend against Western Michigan and tournament host UIC before closing out the weekend against SIUE on Saturday Afternoon.
"We're really excited to play in front of a crowd that's going to feel like a home court for us due to us having so many players that are from or around the midwest." said head coach Betsy Freeburg. "At UIC, we've got three great opponents, starting with Western Michigan, who's had a great start to their year so far."

SCOUTING THE BRONCOS
Western Michigan enters the season on a 4-0 run. The Broncos came off a previous year going 17-13 under the guidance of head coach Colleen Munson. Munson and WMU had two notable wins over Villanova and Michigan. For the first time since 2019, the Broncos start out with an undefeated record.
The Broncos' Anna Calcagno leads the way in kills, totalling 50 and finishing with eight in the team's win over the Wolverines on Tuesday. Along with Calgano, Keona Salesman finished with double-digit kills in the team win in Ann Arbor. The Broncos swept the MAC Weekly Awards, with Salesman, Logan Case and Andelyn Simkins taking offensive, defensive and Setter of the Week honors.

SCOUTING THE FLAMES
UAB and UIC meet for the first time on record. The Flames sit at a record of 3-0 to begin the season, with an early exhibition meeting against Wisconsin. UIC won two straight-set matches against Oakland and Lindenwood in the Chicago Classic, finished the tournament with 154 kills, and averaged a hitting percentage of .268.
Two Flames sit with over 30 kills over the course of three matches: Ayat Amin and Martina Delucchi. Amin, who finished with double-digit kills in all three matches, received a Chicago Classic All-Tournament Team nod. With a .492 attack percentage, she's eclipsed her career-high kills with 14.

SCOUTING THE COUGARS
SIUE and UAB mirror each other in record, with a 1-2 season start for 2023. The Cougars sole win would come over Eastern Michigan in the CEFCU Invitational, finishing the match with 49 kills and 12 blocks. They went on to fall to Bradley and IUPUI. The Cougars average 10.1 kills per set and 2.3 blocks per set.
Junior Priscilla Jones leads the team in kills with 25 and had a season-high 12 against Eastern Michigan. She went on to go for 11 digs in the same match. Attacking at .333, she only totaled five errors on the weekend. On the defensive, the Cougars forced 77 attack errors and 34 service errors. SUIE totals 28 blocks going into this weekend, courtesy of Jones and teammate Sydney Hummert, both tied with nine. Hummert averaged .75 blocks per set, and finished with ten kills, nine digs and four blocks in the team's win over EMU.
