8/14/2023 8:54:00 AM | Men's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM – The Asheville Championship announced its opening round matchups on Monday morning and UAB men's basketball is set to face Clemson at 8:30 p.m. CT on Friday, November 10. The Blazers will then play on Sunday, November 12 against Davidson or Maryland. The tournament will be played at Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville, N.C. and tickets can be purchased here.
The Blazers will face the Tigers for the fourth time in program history. UAB leads the overall series, 2-1, while Clemson took the last meeting between the two programs in 2011. Andy Kennedy holds a 1-1 record against Clemson with both meetings coming during his time at Ole Miss. UAB has not faced an ACC opponent since the 2018-19 season when the Blazers took on Florida State at the AdvoCare Invitational.
Last season, the Blazers captured the Sunshine Slam title with wins over South Florida and Georgia. The title marked UAB's first MTE championship since 2019 and Andy Kennedy's fifth MTE title as a head coach and his first since 2014.
Kennedy and staff added nine new players this offseason including four from the transfer portal, four from junior college and one from high school. Three of the Blazers' four Juco transfers were ranked among the top 10 nationally according to JucoRecruiting.com in Christian Coleman, Alejandro Vasquez and Yaxel Lendeborg. UAB picked up Daniel Ortiz (North Alabama), James White (Ole Miss), Barry Dunning Jr. (Arkansas) and Will Shaver (North Carolina) from the transfer portal while KJ Satterfield, the lone high school signee, rounded out the class.
The complete 2023-24 non-conference schedule will be released soon. View the 2024 American Athletic Conference men's basketball schedule pairings here.
