UAB Volleyball Announces 2023 Schedule

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Volleyball enters season 44, welcoming new and old opponents to the docket. The Blazers also enter their first season under a new league in the American Conference.
The Green and Gold come off a 12-15 record overall and a 7-7 C-USA record. UAB finished its final season in Conference USA, placing fifth overall. With a new era in the American, the 2023 season features two home tournaments, a C-USA Tournament rematch, two SEC matchups, and a flurry of AAC opponents.
"We cannot wait to compete against some new and old foes in our first volleyball season in the AAC," said head coach Betsy Freeburg on the outlook of the up-and-coming season under a new league. "We paired the conference schedule with a non-conference lineup that will certainly challenge us and prepare us for the tough competition we will face week in and week out."
The Blazers introduce eight newcomers to the roster, including a West Virginia transfer and two district champions.
NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE
UAB starts its season with an exhibition match against Mississippi State in Starkville, where the Blazers and Bulldogs face off on August 18.
The Green and Gold return to the Magic City, opening their home schedule with their first tournament of the year, featuring old faces such as Buffalo State and FAMU, and welcoming Austin Peay to Bartow Arena Aug. 25-27. The Blazers then go from the Magic City to the Windy City, playing SIU Edwardsville, Western Michigan, and UIC.
The Blazers feature one more home tournament on Sept. 8-10, hosting two Texas-based teams and closing the tournament against the Crimson Tide of Alabama. This is one of two SEC matchups on the docket for the Blazers, with their second meeting coming against Auburn the following week.
CONFERENCE SCHEDULE
Closing out September, the Blazers host their first AAC matchup against Rice on Sept. 20 followed by ECU on Sept. 23-24 in Bartow Arena. UAB then travels to Tampa to take on South Florida that same week.
Entering October, the Green and Gold welcome former C-USA-turned-American opponent UNT (Oct. 6), followed by Tulsa (Oct. 8) to Bartow before traveling to the Music City to take on Memphis. The Blazers return from Memphis playing FAU at Bartow the following week before traveling to face SMU (Oct. 27) and Tulane (Oct. 29).
Closing out the remainder of the season, the Blazers revisit Charlotte, (Nov. 3-4) and travel to Temple (Nov. 10-11). They complete their home campaign in Bartow for Senior Night on Nov. 17 against UTSA. They close out the season in Kansas taking on the Wichita State Shockers before gearing up for the NCAA/NIVC tournament.
