BIRMINGHAM – The UAB beach volleyball team finished with a 1-3 record this weekend at the GSU Digging Duals hosted by Georgia State in Atlanta.
The Blazers (14-13) defeated UT Martin 5-0, and lost to a trio of ranked teams in No. 11 Georgia State (5-0), No. 16 South Carolina (3-2) and No. 20 Stetson (4-1).
UAB opened the tournament on Friday by almost springing the upset over South Carolina but ultimately fell short on Court 1 in the third and decisive set by the score of 16-14. It was a highly competitive match that saw UAB win on courts two and five.
The Blazers then rebounded in the afternoon match to sweep UT Martin, 5-0. It was a big win for UAB as UT Martin was a 2022 NCAA Tournament participant and beat two ranked teams this weekend in Atlanta.
On Saturday, UAB fell short in a pair of matches as Stetson bested the Blazers 4-1, followed by suffering a sweep at the hands of Georgia State.
Brooke Pertuit and Mikayla Law-Heese shined for the Blazers by finishing the tournament with a record of 3-1 on Court 2 with wins over South Carolina, UT Martin and Stetson. Pertuit now has a team-best 17-10 individual record.
UAB returns home next weekend to host the Blazer Beach Bash and welcomes Tulane, Southern Miss and Central Arkansas to Blazer Beach.
