BIRMINGHAM – UAB head women's tennis coach Mark Tjia has announced the addition of Sarah Katherine "Suki" Bateh to the program on Thursday evening. The announcement was made at the team's annual banquet held in the UAB Football practice facility.
Suki has Rett Syndrome, which is a developmental disorder that is first recognized in infancy. It strikes all racial and ethnic groups and occurs worldwide in 1 of every 10,000 to 23,000 female births.
"First of all, we want to thank Team IMPACT for introducing us to Suki and the Bateh family. We are also thankful to Marie and Brian Bateh for making the time and for trusting us to get to know Suki. I speak for the entire team in saying we are so excited to have Suki as a Blazer. We look forward to many more opportunities to support, laugh, love, and inspire one another in the coming years."
Team IMPACT is an organization that matches children facing serious illness or disability with college sports teams to create a long-term, life-changing experience for all involved. The mission of the multi-year program is a mutually beneficial relationship of belonging, empowerment and resilience.
