UAB Softball Falls at No. 11 Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – UAB Softball (21-19) held No. 11 Arkansas (29-12) scoreless through 5.1 innings, but the Razorbacks' five-run sixth inning was the difference as the hosts took the first game of the series, 5-0.
"I thought we played clean defense, behind another great outing from Leigha Kirby, through five innings." Head Coach AJ Daugherty said, "We had our opportunity to apply some pressure by scoring in the top of the sixth but couldn't come up with that timely hit. To take a top 15 team into the sixth inning tied 0-0 is a good outing for us.
"Now, we need to reset and come back tomorrow with good energy."

Leigha Kirby was stellar for the Blazers in the circle. She allowed only one hit over her first five innings. The first inning was highlighted by a diving stop by Lindsey Smith at third base for a fielder's choice.
Neither team allowed a runner to reach scoring position until the fourth inning when Arkansas put a runner on second with only one out after the leadoff batter was hit by a pitch. Kirby was able to get out of the inning without any damage to keep the game tied.
The Blazers threatened to take the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Hannah Miles led off the inning with a double down the left field line and she moved over to third on a groundout. UAB was unable to bring her in and take the lead.
Arkansas responded with a five-run bottom half of the inning to take control. With one out, a single and a double put runners in scoring position. A pair of grounders on the infield along with UAB errors allowed the Razorbacks to take a 3-0 lead before a pair of RBI singles made it a 5-0 contest.
The Blazers were unable to match the Arkansas sixth, dropping the first game of the series.
