Blazers Fall by One to Rice at Young Memorial Field

BIRMINGHAM – Although out hitting the Owls eight to five, UAB (5-13, 0-2) fell 2-1 to Rice (10-9, 2-0) after the game stood at a tie for three innings on Saturday, March 18 at Young Memorial Field.
Both teams scored a run in the third inning. The Blazers brought their run after John Marc Mullins singled then made his way to third with the help of a wild pitch and an error before Christian Hall doubled to left field. The Owls scored their run from a solo home run. The game stood at 1-1 until the seventh inning when Rice hit a single to score the final run of the day.
On the mound for UAB, Blayze Berry started and threw a complete five innings and allowed one run on three hits with a season high in strikeouts (8). Carson Knight followed Berry to face three batters and collect two outs in the sixth before Jonah Smith (1-1) came on and allowed the go-ahead run on two hits and a strikeout. Smith was given the loss. Braxton Shelton closed out the game for the Blazers after he threw two shutout innings and collected two strikeouts.
Three Blazers recorded a multi-hit game including Tyler Waugh (2-for-4), Darryl Buggs (2-for-4) and Peyton Puckett (2-for-4). Waugh, who currently has a nine-game hitting streak, reached base twice on singles and once after being hit by a pitch. Buggs and Peyton both collected two singles each. Mullins and Hall also reached base from a single and a double which led to UAB's only run of the game.
