BIRMINGHAM – UAB (5-12) dropped game one, 8-1, to Rice (9-9) on the opening night of conference play on Fri., March 17 at Young Memorial Field.
UAB stayed scoreless through five innings until a leadoff single by John Marc Mullins and a walk from Tyler Waugh followed by a RBI single from Christian Hall scored the Blazers' only run of the game. Rice scored multiple runs in the third, eighth and ninth innings and always held a lead over UAB.
Brooks Walton (1-2) started on the mound for the Blazers and received the loss after he allowed three runs – all earned – on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts during his five innings. Four Blazers followed Walton including Thomas Ballard, Christian Clack, John Luke Marlin and Colin Daniel. Ballard and Marlin both threw less than an inning to allow a combined no runs on three hits and two strikeouts. Clack tied his season high of innings pitched (2.0). He faced 10 batters and allowed three runs on one hit with a strikeout. Daniel came on in the ninth and allowed two runs – earned – on three hits with a single strikeout to help send the Blazers to the plate one last time.
UAB out hit Rice until the eighth inning but could not capitalize after reaching base and leaving a total of 11 men stranded.
