UAB MBB Advances to C-USA Title Game
3/10/2023 7:42:00 PM | Men's Basketball
FRISCO, Texas – UAB men's basketball (25-8, 14-6 C-USA) advanced to the Conference USA title game for the second consecutive season after taking down No. 2 seed North Texas (26-7, 16-4 C-USA) in Frisco, 76-69. Jordan Walker scored 32 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out six assists in the win.
The Blazers jumped all over the Mean Green early in the contest, taking a 22-2 lead after nearly 12 minutes of play. Walked scored 14 of UAB's first 22 points, capping the run with a four-point play.
North Texas fought back, however, and got right back into the game by the end of the first half. The Mean Green cut a 20-point UAB lead to just seven points by the end of the first half, trailing only 35-28 after Sissoko's lay-in at the buzzer.
UAB came out of the locker room and put the lead back at double digits with buckets from KJ Buffen and Tavin Lovan. The Blazers were able to stretch the lead out to 16 points in the second half, but the Mean Green would not go away.
With just over two minutes to go, the Blazers led by 11 after Walker knocked down his sixth three of the night. North Texas quickly erased the deficit, going on a 12-3 run over one minute to make it a 71-69 game following a pair of UAB turnovers.
Eric Gaines and Tavin Lovan scored the game's final five points at the free throw line to secure the win and a trip to the championship game for the Blazers.
