UAB Falls in Extra Innings to Michigan

Kennesaw, Ga. – UAB Baseball (4-9) forced extra innings in the ninth but fell 7-5 to Michigan (5-8) in game one of the Mike Sansing Classic on Fri., March 10.
The Blazers scored early in the first after John Marc Mullins made his way around the diamond and scored after Christian Hall walked. UAB fell behind four runs going into the ninth. The Blazers loaded the bases with one out after David Harris singled to center field followed by Tyler Waugh who walked and Darryl Buggs singled to right field. On a 1-1 count, Henry Hunter hit a grand slam to right center field – his first home run of the season and first career grand slam – to tie and send the game into extra innings. Michigan scored two runs in the top of the tenth, but UAB could not answer back in the bottom of the inning.
Eight Blazers took the mound for UAB. Starter Blayze Berry pitched five and two thirds of an inning, but Tyler Haines (0-3) received the loss after he allowed two runs – earned – on one hit. Berry allowed two runs – one earned – on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Including Haines, seven Blazers followed Berry: Christian Clack, Jonah Smith, Thomas Ballard, Braxton Shelton, Carson Knight and John Luke Marlin. Clack, Shelton, Knight and Marlin threw for a combined 1.2 innings and allowed one hit, one walk and one strikeout. Smith allowed one run – earned – on four hits with one strikeout followed by Ballard who allowed two earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
Offensively for UAB, two Blazers recorded multi-hit games – John Marc Mullins (2-for-5) and Brayton Brown (2-for-5) while five others collected hits. Henry Hunter collected four RBIs after his grand slam in the bottom ninth. David Harris, Tyler Waugh and Darryl Buggs all scored one of UAB's runs.

UAB will face Michigan again for game one of a two-game day on Sat., March 11 starting at 11 A.M. CST. The Blazers will play KSU approximately 45 minutes prior to the conclusion of game one.
