Softball Splits Day Two of the Green and Gold Classic

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Softball concluded their day with a split record against ULM and Butler. The Blazers lost to the Warhawks early this morning with a score of 6 to 3, followed by an afternoon win over the Butler Bulldogs 9-5.

The Blazers' record improves to 9-6 overall as they close out the second day of the 2023 Green & Gold Classic. They gear up for their final day of tournament competition tomorrow morning.

GAME 1: UAB (3) - ULM (6)
UAB began the game with few opportunities to get on base, with only one runner stranded for the first two innings. At the top of the third, the momentum began to pick up, with ULM tallying four runs to give them a quick lead.

The Blazers responded in the bottom of the fourth off an RBI single from Lindsey Smith to give Sierra Frazier the first run on the board for the Blazers. The Blazers kept the scoring going with another run off of a wild pitch to give Lindsey Smith a run to close the gap to 2-4. UAB would leave a runner on base and conclude the end of the fourth with an out at home plate.

The Warhawks added two more runs in the fifth with two runs. A fielding error from the Blazers put the Bulldogs up 6-2. The Green and Gold then entered the bottom of the fifth with more energy to close the scoring gap, with Bella Wiggins stealing second and advancing on a wild pitch to be in scoring position. Lauren Brock proceeded with an RBI to give the Blazers the final run they'd allot for the game.

ULM concluded the game with a win, dropping the Blazers' record to 8-6.

GAME 2: UAB (9) Butler (5)
The Blazers started out the game trailing the Bulldogs 0-3, with Butler being the first to draw runs on the board early in the first inning. UAB responded with a two-run homer from Sierra Frazier to minimize the scoring gap to push back. The score remained at 2-3 for the duration of the first inning before Butler added another run to the board in the second inning to expand their lead to 4-2.

UAB saw an opportunity and took it in the fourth inning. Alyssa Aguilar was then placed in scoring position off an error from the Bulldogs. Freshman Kaily Collett put a run on the board through Aguilar before scoring herself, tying the game at four apiece. UAB then scored off a run from Collett to take the lead 5-4.

Butler responded with a homer from Hoosen to tie the game at five, their final run before the Blazers turned up the intensity with a series of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Two RBIs resulted from a single from Aguilar to put pinch runner Reese Lowery and third baseman Lindsey Smith across the plate. The score went from 7-5 to 8-5 with an RBI single from Hannah Miles.

The final run from the Blazers came from a homer to left center from Frazier, solidifying the lead at 9-5 and improving their record to 9-6.

UP NEXT
The Blazers conclude the final day of the Green & Gold Classic with two games, making up for their Friday matchup against Butler postponed due to weather. UAB takes on the Butler Bulldogs at 11:45 am, followed by a meeting with the Warhawks of ULM to close out the day at 2 pm.
