BIRMINGHAM – UAB Track & Field gave great strides in the tail end of the 2023 C-USA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Blazers returned to action early Sunday morning to finish where they left off, adding to the improving performances.
"We challenged these ladies to come out and have everyone leave the meet with either a PR or seasonal best. With two exceptions, they did that. It was a great weekend for them to step up and compete how we know they can." said head coach Kurt Thomas.
The Blazers totaled 25 PRs, with six other notable personal bests throughout the team this weekend. In addition to the personal improvements, the Blazers were able to stand atop the podium after a second-place finish from Katherine Duren in the 60m hurdles.
"We had some nice surprises like Megan getting fourth in the Pent and Olivia's eighth place finish in the high jump," said Thomas. "So many others stepped up and finished higher than they were ranked coming in."
In multis, freshman Megan Hamilton-Strong saw a top five performance in the pentathlon, scoring 3435. In the field, Birthe Franck-Petersen crested her prior school record of 13.79m in shot put with a new record of 13.97m.
On the track, Lauren Charlton completed the 3000m with a top-ten finish and PR time to conclude her first indoor campaign.
"We didn't finish in the team place we thought we could be before the season started. We had some injuries to key athletes that hurt. But this team really stepped up and got better. We'll take this momentum to outdoor and try to keep it going."

The Blazers prepare for indoor, while the NCAA Indoor Championships will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, March 10-11.
