Blazers Drop Season Opener in Extra Innings

MOBILE, ALA. – UAB (0-1) falls in extra innings, 5-4, to Eastern Kentucky University (1-0) on Friday, Feb. 17 in game one of the Jaguar Classic.
The Blazers quickly jumped ahead, 2-0, in the top of the first and held EKU in the bottom of the inning when Blayze Berry punched out the first three batters. UAB scored two more in the fourth while the Colonels scored in the second, fifth and sixth to tie the game at 4-4 before walking off in the eleventh.
For the Blazers, JC Sewell (0-1) was charged the loss after coming in at the bottom of the ninth and allowing one run, which was earned, on two hits during his 2.1 innings on the mound. Blayze Berry came out strong for UAB at the start allowing two runs – both earned – on six hits with five strikeouts.
Following Berry, six Blazers spent time on the mound including Colin Daniel, Christian Clack, John Luke Marlin, Carson Knight, Jonah Smith and Sewell. Daniel, Clack, Knight and Smith all combined for two hits, two runs – all earned – three walks and two strikeouts. Marlin went 2.1 innings like Sewell and only allowed two hits with one strikeout.
Offensively for UAB, three Blazers collected multi-hit games including John Marc Mullins (2-for-3), Logan Braunschweig (2-for-4) and Darryl Buggs (2-for-5). Two Blazers recorded doubles – Brayton Brown and Mullins – to put runners in scoring positions both times.

John Marc Mullins led off with a double to put UAB on the board first followed by Ben Abernathy reaching on a walk. Christian Hall singled to first which advanced Mullins home – Hall and Abernathy advance a base on a throwing error.

EKU gets on the board after Miguel Larreal singles followed by a Jalen Jones double to left field which scored Larreal.

The Blazers extend their lead by two runs after starting the inning with a Darryl Buggs single followed by a Gavin Lewis Jr. single. Mullins walked which advances the runners before Ben Abernathy reached first on a fielder's choice, Mullins advanced to second on a throwing error and Buggs and Lewis Jr. scored.
UAB 4, EKU 1
Bottom Fifth
The Colonels score a run after Jones and Connor Davis both singled followed by a Logan Thomason single up the middle which score Jones.

Bottom Sixth
EKU tied the game after starting the inning off with a Will King single to left field followed by a Charles Ludwick walk. Jones tripled down the right field line to score King and Ludwick.
Bottom Eleventh
EKU walks off in the eleventh after Davis, Thomason and Matthew Corlew both walked followed by a sacrifice fly to score Davis.
