LAKE CHARLES – The UAB Softball team (2-3) finished the Classic taking on host school, McNeese State in the early afternoon hours of Sunday. The Blazers concluded the game with a 2-4 loss to the Cowgirls.
"I thought we did a good job, all weekend, of striking first. I believe we scored first in all five games this weekend," said head coach AJ Daugherty. "We need to continue to throw early punches and improve on our ability to both defend the lead and extend our lead. That's a mentality thing that we need to adjust."
The Blazers overall record against McNeese now sits at one win and four losses.
UAB (2) v. MCNEESE STATE (4)
The Blazers began the game similar to the first two days of the tournament. They would be the first to draw runs on the board off an RBI from Sierra Frazier. Lindsey Smith would also deliver a double to give Frazier the run to give UAB the early 2-0 lead.
The second inning went scoreless before the Cowgirls sent a homer to left center to tie the score at two runs apiece. McNeese delivered another homer right after, resulting in 2RBIs to put the Cowgirls in the lead 4-2.
A scoring drought ensued for the remainder of the game before the Blazers found a light entering the seventh inning. Reese Lowery entered as a pinch runner for Olivia Valbak and Chloe Bahruth entered as a pinch hitter for Hannah Miles.
With the bases loaded after a single from Bahruth, Bella Wiggins stepped to the plate to deliver a double play called out, followed by Lilly Crowe being called out. The game ended with the Cowgirls winning four runs to two.

QUOTES FROM AJ DAUGHERTY
(On the Seventh Inning) "As the coach of the trailing team, you want to see your team get themselves in a position to tie the game or take the lead. We have to improve on our ability to come up with the big hit with runners in scoring position."
(On the direction of the team) "Really feel good about the direction we're heading. The team is beginning to morph into the pressure-applying, multi-dimensional offensive team we want to be. We ran the bases fairly well, we got some short-game execution, and we are beginning to better understand the defensive concepts."
"This was a good weekend for us with tests against a couple of quality, NCAA Tournament-caliber teams. We will go back to work to polish some areas and keep growing. The best days are ahead of this team. Excited to see where we're headed."
