NASHVILLE – UAB Track & Field finished the Vanderbilt Music City Challenge with stellar marks. The Blazers concluded the meet with a series of program records and personal bests to close out the regular season for indoor track.
"Overall, we've battled some adversity this indoor season, but have been competing hard," said head coach Kurt Thomas. "We are so close to big performances in so many areas. We must stay focused on being our best at the conference meet next weekend."
DAY ONE
The Blazers began the meet on day one with the distance crew putting on a record-breaking performance in the mile. Four ladies in the Green and Gold finished with PRs, with Kathleen Schellman running under five minutes with a 4:57.36. Sangie Lincoln Velez, Kyra Hayes, and Ava Brooks followed with personal bests of their own.
In the 600m, Regina Harris and Alicia Abalos Cervera vaulted to the top ten performance list with times of 1:36.38 and 1:37.46 respectively. Harris and Abalos Cervera's times shoot past Lauren Fayen and Bianca Le'Blanc's 2011 records at third and fifth place all-time.
In field events, Olivia Beard also set a PR in high jump with a height of 1.57m.
DAY TWO
The performances kept rolling, with UAB setting more records the following day on the field. Trinity Fellows would best her prior jump in pole vault with a new personal best of 3.60m, holding her spot on the all-time list in pole vault at fifth place.
Birthe Franck-Petersen jumped to the all-time best performance in shot put with a throw of 13.79m. She surpassed her previous best from 2021, a distance of 13.14m.
"We had great performances this weekend in Nashville," said head coach Kurt Thomas. "Birthe set a new school record in the shot put of 13.79 (45'-3"). Kathleen and the distance runners had a great meet, with her running 4:57 on Friday night, followed by PRs from Sangie, Kyra, and Ava. Gina and Ali ran great 600m races putting them numbers three and five on our all-time list."
