Softball Splits Saturday Series at Cowgirl Classic

LAKE CHARLES – The UAB Softball Team concluded their Saturday series at the Cowgirl Classic against Central Arkansas and Idaho State. The Green and Gold finished with a split record against the Bears and Bengals. The Blazers' record now sits at 2-2 overall as they roll into day three on Sunday.

GAME ONE: UAB (7) v. IDAHO STATE (2)
UAB opened up the first game against the Bengals of Idaho State, where the Blazers were first to draw runs on the board with an RBI from Sierra Frazier. Freshman Hannah Miles tallied her first career homer in the second inning, putting the score at 2-0.

The offense was tested by the Bengals, who kept the Blazers at two runs for two-and-a-half innings. The momentum shifted entering the top of the fifth inning, where Frazier stole second, followed by Lindsey Smith sending a single in the direction of the pitcher. This play put UAB in the position to score, which they did soon thereafter with a run from Bella Wiggins, followed by Frazier stealing home.

The Blazers scored five runs in the fifth inning. UAB totaled seven stolen bases, with two coming from Frazier, Smith, and Reese Lowery. Sarah Cespedes closed the game with 11 strikeouts, tying her career-high of 11 against Morgan State in 2019.

GAME TWO: UAB (1) v. CENTRAL ARKANSAS (4)
The Green and Gold returned to action later that Saturday afternoon, taking on the UCA Bears for the second time in the tournament. The Blazers were first to swing with a run from Bella Wiggins to score first in the game with a run to put the Blazers on top. But like the Idaho State game, a scoring drought ensued soon after.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of UAB up until the sixth inning. UCA responded with a run of their own to tie before adding three more to come up four runs to the Blazers' one in the top of the sixth. UAB responded in the bottom of the sixth, but were unable to capitalize off the runners on base. Ja'nae Wray and Cassady Greenwood entered as pinch hitters at the bottom of the seventh, but the Bears maintained the lead and closed out with a win.

Leigha Kirby pitched five of seven innings, tallying four strikeouts for the Blazers, while Caitlin Russell added a strikeout of her own to the stat line. Alyssa Aguilar finished with an RBI, putting the Blazers in a position to score early in the game.

The Blazers close out the McNeese State Cowgirl Classic by taking on the hosts, the McNeese State Cowgirls. The game begins at 12:30 pm at Joe Miller Field.
