Perfect Third Quarter Lifts UAB Over Nicholls, 73-62

THIBODAUX, La. – A dominant third quarter in which the Blazers did not miss a shot lifted the UAB women's basketball team to a 73-62 victory over Nicholls on Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gymnasium in Louisiana.
With the scored tied 32-32 at halftime, UAB shot 11-of-11 from the floor in the third quarter and outscored Nicholls 31-13 to take full control of the game.
The win improves UAB to 7-2 overall and dropped Nicholls to 6-5.
"Winning on the road is never easy and today was no different," Head Coach Randy Norton said. "It's was a game of runs. We had some outstanding play throughout the game. We are especially proud of how our team came out the third quarter and put the game away. With seven minutes left in the game we had extended the lead to 24 points."
Mia Moore tallied her fourth double-double of the season while leading the Blazers in points (19) and rebounds (12). She paced three players in double figures as Tracey Bershers added 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from 3-point range and Maddie Walsh added a season-high 15 points.
UAB made a season-high 13 3-pointers and shot 48 percent from deep (13-of-27). The Blazers played with the lead for 34 minutes.
With the Blazers trailing 16-15 towards the end of the first quarter, Desiree Ware scored a driving layup which sparked a 13-0 Blazer run. UAB scored the final five points of the first and led 20-16 at the break, then scored the first eight points of the second quarter to gain a 28-16 advantage.
However, with the Blazers leading 30-18, Nicholls went on a 9-0 run and cut the UAB lead to 30-27 with 3:35 left in the half. Nicholls ultimately outscored UAB 14-2 down the stretch of the second quarter and the two team went into the locker room tied at 32.
The Blazers blitzed the Colonels in the third quarter and opened the second half on a 13-2 run to gain a 45-34 lead. UAB outscored the Colonels 31-13 in the quarter and was 5-of-5 from long range for a 63-45 lead heading into the fourth.
With an 18-point advantage, the Blazers put it on cruise control in the fourth quarter. A last-second triple from Nicholls brought the final score to 73-62. UAB is now 2-0 on the road this season.
The Blazers return to Bartow Arena this coming Tuesday, Dec. 12, to host South Carolina State at 12 p.m.
