Moore Leads UAB to 69-54 Victory over South Carolina State

BIRMINGHAM – Sophomore guard Mia Moore led four players in double figures as the UAB women's basketball team defeated South Carolina State 69-54 on Tuesday afternoon at Bartow Arena.
Moore finished the game with 21 points and 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. It was also her fifth time scoring 20+ points and her fifth time pulling down 10 or more rebounds in a game. Moore continues to lead the American Athletic Conference with an average of 9.9 rebounds per game.
Freshman Jade Weathersby added 15 points for her fifth double figure scoring game of the season, while Tracey Bershers had 12 and Maddie Walsh 11.
Ten of UAB's 20 total made field goals came from long range and the Blazes have now made 23 triples in their last two games combined. UAB was also 19-of-22 at the line and continues to be one of the best free throw shooting teams in the country.
South Carolina State (1-10) scored the first six points of the game and made seven of its first nine shots. The Bulldogs played with the lead for the majority of the first quarter until the Blazers (8-2) went on a 5-1 run to close out the frame and led 19-18 after one.
It was all UAB in the second quarter as the Blazers outscored the Bulldogs 20-6 and held a 39-24 advantage at the half. Weatherby poured in 13 first half points and UAB was 11-of-12 at the line to help extend the lead.
UAB outscored SC State 19-16 in the third and eventually built its largest lead of 23 points (63-40) at the 7:03 mark of the fourth on a jumper in the lane from Weathersby.
Denim DeShields had eight of the team's 15 assists and is now averaging an AAC-best 6.2 assists per game.
The Blazers return to action in eight days from now when they travel to Philadelphia to participate in the Hawks Classic hosted by Saint Joseph's. UAB opens play on Wednesday, Dec. 20 against Wagner.
