BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team hits the road this weekend for a contest at Nicholls on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
After playing four games in eight days at Bartow Arena, the Blazers had six days off before Saturday's game at Nicholls. UAB enters the contest at 6-2 overall, while Nicholls is 6-4. This is a return trip in a home-and-home series after UAB hosted the Colonels last year in Birmingham and won 69-40.
Jade Weathersby is the reigning American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week following an outstanding three games in which she averaged 13.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and shot 52 percent from the floor. She tied her career high with 17 points against Auburn and has now scored double digits in each of her last four games.
Weathersby is 33-of-39 at the line this season (84.6%) which has helped UAB move up to No. 3 nationally in free throw percentage as a team. The Blazers have made 138-of-166 at the charity stripe (83.1%) and their top four leading scorers are all shooting over 80 percent at the line.
UAB's leading scorer Mia Moore earned AAC Honor Roll recognition for a third time last week after posting back-to-back double-doubles against Jacksonville State and Mississippi Valley State. The 5-foot-6 guard is averaging 18.0 points and is leading the AAC with an average of 9.4 rebounds per game.
Fellow guard Denim DeShields is also leading the AAC in a statistical category as her 5.9 assists per game tops the league. Just a true sophomore, DeShields is 12 points away from 500 in her career.
Following the trip to Nicholls, UAB returns home to face South Carolina State on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at Bartow Arena. Tip is set for 12 p.m.
