BIRMINGHAM – UAB Volleyball welcomes three new faces on National Signing Day. Shayla Henry, Meg Jarrett, and Abby Jones signed their National Letters of Intent early Wednesday morning, making their commitments to the Green and Gold official.
The Class of 2024 Signees features a GHSA First Team All-Region honoree, a 2021 Florida Athletic Coaches Association Player of the Year, and a 2023 AVCA All-Region 3 recipient.
SHAYLA HENRY - OH/DS
The Port St. Lucie native represents the Eagles, where she was a 2020-21 Varsity Volleyball MVP. She would also be named the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Player of the Year the same year. Playing for the UponTop Volleyball Academy, Henry comes from a volleyball-heavy family; with two older siblings, they played for Warner and Bethune-Cookman.
Coach Freeburg's Analysis:
Through the recruiting process, it became apparent how curious Shay was about getting better, and she loves reviewing film. She is a student of the game, which is apparent in her play. Shay can kill the ball in many different ways, and she will bring a dynamic element to our offense.
Henry plans to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice upon graduating from St. Lucie.
MEG JARRETT - L/DS
The sole Alabama native in the signing class, Meg Jarrett represents Bob Jones High School in Madison, Alabama. She was named to the 2023 AVCA All-Region in Region 3 and named number four of the top seniors in Alabama by AL.com. Jarrett would also play on the North/South All-Star team, named the North MVP.
Coach Freeburg's Analysis:
We have known Meg and seen her develop into an elite libero not only in Alabama but also in the southeast. Not only is Meg a great passer and defender, but her energy is contagious. Meg is a player that others want to play with, and we can't wait to have that energy in Bartow.
The Daughter of Brian and Jenny Jarret and sister of Emma and Elli, She plans to pursue a major in business.
ABBY JONES - OH
Jones hails from Johns Creek, GA, playing for the Johns Creek Gladiators. JCHS was ranked eighth in the state by MaxPreps after a 31-10 finish for the 2023 season. Jones was named team captain her senior year, leading her team to the GHSA Elite Eight and final four. Finishing over 1,000 kills throughout high school, she was named first-team All-Region.
Coach Freeburg's Analysis:
Abby has a lot of high-level volleyball experience, playing at the 18 Open level for the last two seasons and most recently against international opponents. This perspective will be a great addition to the gym. She also comes from one of the top clubs in the country, and we are looking forward to her bringing her skills and work ethic to the team.
Jones grew up in California, playing volleyball at six years old before moving to the Peach State. She graduated from Johns Creek in pursuit of a degree in kinesiology while at UAB.
