BIRMINGHAM – A 27-point, 14 rebound double-double from Mia Moore and 24 points from Denim DeShields lifted the UAB women's basketball team to an 85-78 victory in overtime against Jacksonville State on Monday night at Bartow Arena.
For Moore, it was her fourth time in six games scoring over 20 points and she tied her career with 27 points while establishing a new career-high with 14 rebounds. The 24 points for DeShields are a season high.
Freshman Jade Weathersby also had an outstanding game with 14 points and nine rebounds. All of Weathersby's points came in the second half and overtime.
The Blazers (5-1) had an opportunity to win the game in regulation but Moore's jumper in the lane bounced off the iron. However, UAB outscored JSU 13-6 in the overtime period to improve to 4-0 home this season.
Moore, DeShields and Weathersby combined to score 51 of the team's 62 points in the second half and overtime period.
The Gamecocks (2-4) built an early 11-4 lead, but back-to-back buckets from Moore brought the score to 11-8 at the first media timeout of the game.
JSU went on a 6-0 run out of that timeout to gain a 17-8 advantage, but an and-1 from Desiree Ware and 1-of-2 from the line for Moore brought the score to 17-12 after one.
Those four points to end the first quarter turned into a 15-0 run as UAB gained a 23-17 lead and force a Jacksonville State timeout with 6:29 left in the first half.
The Gamecocks responded with an 8-0 run of their own and regained a 25-23 lead with a layup from Keiara Griffin with 2:06 left in the half. JSU ultimately ended the half on a 13-0 run and led 30-23 at the half.
Led by eight points from Maddie Walsh, the Blazers outscored the Gamecocks 24-18 in the third quarter and DeShields' 3-pointer at the buzzer made the score 48-47 in favor of JSU entering the fourth.
The two teams went back and forth the entire fourth quarter and with UAB trailing by five (70-65), Moore hit a triple, followed by two free throws to tie the game at 70 with 1:47 left. Weathersby gave UAB a 72-70 advantage with :29 remaining, but Kristol Ayson's jumper with four seconds to go tied it at 72-72. Moore's last second jumper was no good as the teams went to overtime.
JSU converted an and-1 to gain a 75-74 lead, but four straight points from DeShields put the Blazers ahead for good and UAB made all 10 its free throws in overtime to secure the victory. UAB was 23-of-26 from the line in the game.
UAB returns to action on Wednesday as the Blazers host Mississippi Valley State at 6 p.m.
