UAB Leads Wire-to-Wire in 88-56 Win over Mississippi Valley State

BIRMINGHAM – Sophomore guard Ashton Elley led five players in double figures with a career-high 17 points as the UAB women's basketball team defeated Mississippi Valley State 88-56 on Wednesday night at Bartow Arena.
Elley scored her 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 5-of-7 from behind the arc. Both Mia Moore (11-11) and Tracey Breshers (11-10) had double-doubles, which was the first time since the 2020-21 season that UAB has had two player tally double-doubles in the same game.
UAB entered the contest ranked eighth nationally in free throw percentage and made 22-of-24 from the line this evening. The Blazers out-rebounded Valley 52-33 and had 53 bench points. Along with Elley, Moore and Bershers, Desiree Ware (10) and Jade Weathersby (10) also had double figures. Weathersby has now been in double figures each of her last three games.
The Blazers are 5-0 at home this season and improved their overall record to 6-1 on the year.
Breshers scored the first eight UAB points and UAB led 23-10 after one. Breshers was 4-of-4 from the floor in the opening quarter, including three triples.
UAB scored the first six points of the second quarter to extend its advantage to 29-10. The lead would grow to 23 on two separate occasions in the second quarter and the Blazers were up by 19 at the half (42-23).
UAB pulled away behind 56 percent shooting in the third quarter to gain a 64-37 advantage entering the fourth. UAB scored 11 of its 24 fourth quarter points at the free throw line to earn its largest margin of victory of the season (32).
UAB returns to action on Sunday when the Blazers host the Auburn Tigers at Bartow Arena. Tip is set for 2:30 p.m. and the first 150 students get a free t-shirt.
