A triple for Shorter's Ahtiana Benway gave the Hawks a 24-23 lead with 6:11 left in the half, but DeShields and Moore combined for a 6-0 UAB run to give the Blazers a 29-24 advantage and it was a lead the Blazers would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
UAB led 35-29 at halftime led by Schneringer's nine points. Despite shooting 43 percent in the first half and out-rebounding Shorter 25-17, 12 first half turnovers hampered the Blazers which kept the game close.
UAB opened the second half on an 8-2 run to extend its lead to 43-31, but Tori Smiley scored eight consecutive points for Shorter to keep the Hawks in reach as UAB led 47-41 at the third quarter media timeout.
