BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's soccer defenders Asha Zuniga and Abby Graeser have earned American Athletic Conference postseason honors, as announced by league officials on Monday.
Zuniga was named Second Team All-Conference while Graeser was placed on the All-Rookie Team. These two anchored the back line which allowed only 20 goals in 17 total games and helped the Blazers (6-6-5) earn the eight-seed in the upcoming AAC Tournament.
Zuniga will go down as one of the most decorated players in program history. Now a three-time All-Conference selection, Zuniga started 15 of the 16 games she appeared in and scored two goals from her center back position in 2023. She was a two-time All-Conference player in Conference USA, including the 2022 C-USA Defensive Player of the Year, and now adds an All-Conference recognition in UAB's first season in the AAC.
"Asha has had a fantastic season. She is a true leader and great role model for her teammates," Head Coach Lisa Mann said. "She is invaluable for us. She fully deserves the accolades she gets and we are so grateful to have her as our captain."
Graeser started 13 games as a true freshman and appeared in 15 total. The Hoschton, Ga. native logged the fourth most minutes on the team (1,142) and played stout defense the entire season.
"Graeser has played a huge part in our season," Mann said. "For any freshman to come into this conference, especially as a defender, and play as many minutes as she has, is any exceptional achievement. She fully deserves this accolade and we are so excited to see what she can achieve over her college career."
The Blazers open postseason play on Tuesday against top-seeded Memphis, who is 15-1-0 this season. Kickoff in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT.
