Volleyball Drops Second Match of the Weekend to Memphis

MEMPHIS – UAB Volleyball fell to the Memphis Tigers in a three-set meeting on Saturday afternoon. The Blazers now sit at a record of 2-19 and 0-9 in conference play after the loss.
IN THE SETS
The Blazers opened up the first set with a low hitting -0.067 on the afternoon. The Blazers would be held to only nine points, dropping set one 9-25. In the second set, however, the Blazers were first to strike, with Katia Nikolic putting up back-to-back kills to take the 2-0 lead.
The Green and Gold maintained the lead after a series of runs to jump out to a 7-5 lead. Memphis responded with three straight kills to tie and regain the lead at eight. Both squads were at a standstill for the ninth and tenth points before the Tigers gained and maintained the lead. After a 4-0 run and 4-1 run to push the lead to six points, UAB responded with a run to get within three. However, Memphis continued the momentum to take the 25-19 win in the second set.
In the final set, the Blazers and Tigers went for blows through the first ten points of play, with Memphis reaching the ten-point mark. The Tigers continued their run, jumping out by as much as six points before UAB went on a 9-1 run, getting within a point of Memphis before taking the 22-20 lead. The Blazers' momentum shifted after a series of errors to put Memphis back ahead, 23-22.
Another kill from the Tigers threatened to end the match before Kelsey Smith delivered a kill to put UAB within one. However, the match ended with a kill from Memphis to close out the match in straight sets.
IN THE BOX
- Kelsey Smith was the kills leader for the match with ten. She was shy of a double-double with nine digs. Lidya Canturk contributed 17 assists for the Green and Gold.
- The Blazers finished with a hitting percentage of .118, with middle blockers Chloe Rodriguez and Jay Collins averaging .357 and .375 respectively.
- UAB and Memphis were both equal in blocks with five apiece. Collins finished with three for the Green and Gold.
UP NEXT
The Blazers return to action on Friday and Saturday at Bartow Arena, taking on the Florida Atlantic Owls on October 20 and 21.
