Kells Signs Pro Contract to OFA Apollonios

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Volleyball Alumna, Alex Kells, signed a professional contract to a Greek Club, OFA Apollonios. Kells, who completed her six-year campaign at UAB, signed Wednesday
"Playing professionally overseas has been a goal of Alex's, and she worked hard to make it happen," said head coach Betsy Freeburg. "Alex's 2022 season was the best of her career, and she put herself in position to succeed at the next level. As a coach, it's always so rewarding to see your athletes accomplish their dreams. We are thrilled about this opportunity for Alex, and we cannot wait to cheer on Apollonios from Birmingham!"
As Freeburg previously alluded to, Kells completed a solid 2022 campaign, where she surpassed the 1000-kill mark, one of three Blazers to do so. Kells also received a 2022 Commissioner's Honor Roll nod, along with an All-Conference Second Team honor.
Throughout her career, Kells averaged 2.96 kills per set, and totalled 1,163 kills as a Blazers. She crept close to 1,000 digs, with a total of 924. Over her career, she received three Second Team All-Conference honors and Commissioner's Honor Roll accolades every year of her time being in the Green and Gold.
"I am very excited to announce that I have signed my first professional contract with Apollonius in Greece," said Kells. "I would like to thank all my coaches throughout my career for their consistent belief in me, my friends and family for their love and support, and finally UAB for making this opportunity possible!"
OFA APOLLONIOS
OFA Apollonios is a Volleyball Club founded in Keratsini, Greece in 1983. In their 29 years of existence, Apollonios has appeared in 19 tournaments, including the A1 League, A2 League and Greek Cup.
They enter year 30 with a 15-person roster, including Kells, the sole Canadian represented on the squad. Apollonios is led by Nikos Boutsouris and assisted by Giorgos Mendrinos. Boutsouris enters his first year coaching Apollonios, previously coaching AO Markopoulo in the 2021-22 season.
