BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU hit five free throws in the final 36 seconds of play to hold on to a 75-71 victory over UAB on Wednesday afternoon.
Denim DeShields led the Blazers (9-6, 1-5 C-USA) with 16 points and eight assists. Maria Roters scored 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and Tracey Bershers tied her career-high with 11 points.
Mya Meredith led all scorers with 19 points. Acacia Hayes added 14 for WKU (6-8, 3-2 C-USA).
The Blazers came out of the gates impressively, hitting 12-of 20 shots, including six 3-points to built a 30-15 lead after the 1st quarter. However, in the 2nd quarter UAB only connected on three field goals, while the Lady Tops closed out on a 12-0 run to cut the deficit to a basket at 37-35 going into halftime.
DeShields' 3-pointer at 5:09 in the 3rd quarter put UAB ahead 49-43, but a 9-0 WKU run gave them their first lead of the game at 52-49 at the 3:03 mark. The Blazers would hang on to a one-point lead going into the final quarter at 56-55.
The 4th quarter saw three ties and five lead changes. Trailing by two points, Emily Klaczek's 3-pointer followed by DeShields' layup put UAB up 70-67 with 1:47 left. That would be the last Blazers field goal as a DeShields' foul shot with 1:05 left would be their final point of the contest.
The next home game is Jan.15 versus LA Tech.
