LYNCHBURG, Va. – Four costly fumbles ultimately led to the UAB football team suffering a 21-14 loss to Liberty on Saturday night at Williams Stadium.
Despite rushing for 241 yards as a team, the Blazers were outscored 14-7 in the second half as UAB fell to 1-1 on the season and Liberty improved to 2-0.
DeWayne McBride tallied his ninth career 100-yard rushing game with 20 carries for 177 yards and a touchdown, and Jermaine Brown Jr. added 91 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, but Liberty's defense allowed UAB to gain just 107 total yards in the second half.
Although UAB fumbled twice early, the Blazers led 7-0 after the first quarter. McBride had six carries for 110 yards in the quarter, and his 56-yard rush was followed by a 31-yard touchdown run by Brown Jr. with 1:17 left in the quarter.
Liberty evened the score on its next offensive possession by going 66 yards in eight plays, which was capped on a five yard rush by Shedro Louis to even the score with 12:55 remaining in the half.
UAB gained 228 of its 248 total yards of offense in the first half on the ground, but despite the rushing attack, the two teams went into the locker room tied at 7-7.
Liberty took its first lead of the game with 1:18 to go in the third when quarterback Kaidon Slater scrambled from five yards out and punched the ball over the goal line to cap a 62-yard drive.
Liberty's final touchdown came in the fourth after Dae Dae Hunter rushed up the middle for a score 21-7 with 10:59 to go in the game.
The Blazers crawled back late as Noah Wilder recovered a fumble in Liberty territory which McBride turned into a 9-yard rushing score with 3:08 left in the game.
However, that would be the last time the UAB offense would touch the ball as Salter iced the game away with his legs. Salter threw for 202 yards and added 79 yards on the ground to lead the Flames to victory.
Tyler Taylor led UAB's defense with a career-high nine tackles. UAB tallied two sacks and eight tackles for loss in the contest.
The Blazers are back in action next weekend as UAB returns to Protective Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 17 to host Georgia Southern. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
