Rice, St. Louis Lead Blazers Past College of Charleston
8/26/2022 11:26:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BIRMINGHAM – Brooks Rice and Nathaniel St. Louis scored UAB Men's Soccer's two goals on the night and the defense kept the College of Charleston off the board as the Blazers grabbed a 2-0 win for the program's first home victory since March 27, 2021.
The Blazers (1-0-0) jumped on the board early in the first half. In the sixth minute, St. Louis connected with Rice's cross into the box and headed it into the right side of the goal for the first goal of the 2022 campaign.
It did not take long for Rice to look for a goal of his own. Curtis DeLeon found Rice on the right wing with a well-placed ball from midfield. Rice cut inside and drove the ball into the back of the net with his left foot to make it 2-0 for the Blazers.
Following the pair of quick strikes, the game turned much more defensive. In his first appearance as a Blazer, Jack Hudson picked up a clean sheet. Newcomers Nir Shamesh and Christopher Overland shined on the back line, preventing the Cougars from picking up many quality looks on goal.
NOTES
"We've talked a lot about earning the right to win these games. The guys have already put in all of the work in the spring and the preseason to get to where we are right now. Honestly, I think they were ready and primed, and hopefully that will give us some momentum going into Sunday."
UP NEXT
The Blazers will face off with Queens University of Charlotte on Sunday evening at 2:30 p.m. CT. The Royals are in their first year of competition at the Division I level.
