Blazer Nation,
Before we turn the page completely to the upcoming seasons in 2022-23, I wanted to reflect on many unprecedented milestones this past 2021-22 year.
After much anticipation, we had an incredible inaugural season at Protective Stadium. I am extremely proud of the gameday environment including the Gang Green student tailgate, Blazer Village and pre-game Blazer Walk through the heart of Uptown. We are excited to build upon our success in 2022 and continue to solidify many great traditions at UAB Football's new home.
The UAB and Birmingham communities continued to respond in 2021-22 with incredible support to UAB Athletics. We set a record in gross ticket sales revenue, recorded a record number of donors through Blazer Boosters (2,082) during the 2021 giving year, and our Blazer Sports Properties team was named a Learfield Property of the Year for the south region following record revenue.
The unprecedented support and momentum for UAB and UAB Athletics has garnered national attention and set us up for our best years ahead. As great as our story has become, our storytelling is equally incredible. We were excited to share that the UAB football and men's basketball teams' commercials for the 2021 and 2021-22 season were named EMMY award winners for this past year.
UAB announced a transition to the American Athletic Conference this past October which will increase UAB's exposure, raise the profile of the institution and enhance the competitive opportunities for Blazer student-athletes and coaches. Last month, we were able to solidify and share that UAB will officially join the American Athletic Conference on July 1, 2023 leading into the 2023-24 seasons.
I am proud to report that UAB Athletics continues to excel academically and takes great pride in making a difference in the community. UAB had 302 student-athletes recognized on the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, and 15 of 18 teams earned a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher to conclude spring 2022. In addition, Blazer student-athletes completed 3,791 hours of community service and currently sits atop the Conference USA SAAC Cup standings again. Our softball program won the C-USA Academic Excellence Award, and for a second straight season, Nick Robillard was named the Conference USA Men's Golf Scholar Athlete of the Year.
The Blazers experienced tremendous accomplishments in many of its sports during the 2021-22 year.
With the move to the American Athletic Conference, our programs are taking steps to compete at an extremely high level. As we transition to the new league, the continued need for our community support will best position us to enter The American and compete at a high level from day one.
