Softball Scores a Season High in Run-Rule Win vs. UTEP

EL PASO- In their highest scoring game of the season, the UAB softball team got a series clinching victory against UTEP today in El Paso, Texas.
The UAB (24-23, 12-10) bats were scalding hot in the desert heat from start to finish. Bella Wiggins got on base with a lead-off single, and Sierra Frazier rocketed a grand slam to centerfield that put UAB up 4-0. Sophie Page kept things going with an RBI single that scored Alyssa Aguilar. UTEP (15-33, 5-18) answered in the bottom of the first with a three-run homer to right field. UAB added to its lead with an RBI single from Sierra Frazier that brought home Tyler Armistead at the top of the second. Shortly afterward, UAB loaded the bases, and then Lindsey Smith hit her first career grand slam and put the Blazers up 10-3. The Miners kept swinging and added a run in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single.
Each team stranded a runner on base in the third inning. The Blazers bats caught fire again at the top of the fourth, with an Olivia Valbak RBI single, Alyssa Aguilar scoring on an error, Faith Hegh hitting an RBI single, Sierra Frazier hitting a 2 RBI single, and Jolie Readeaux blasting a three-run homer to put the Blazers up by 14 runs. UTEP responded in the bottom of the fourth with a run scored on an error, an RBI double and an RBI single. UAB got a double from Makenzie Droddy, and pinch runner Reese Lowery stole third base, but the Blazers were unable to score, and the game remained 18-7. The Miners went to bat in the bottom of the fifth with a chance to avoid the run-rule, but the first three UTEP batters went down in order to end the game with a final score of 18-7.
Bailey Tindell (3-6) picked up the pitching win, tossing two strikeouts in two innings of work. UAB piled up 20 hits in five innings. Sierra Frazier recorded seven RBIs on the day.
Game 3 versus UTEP will begin tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. MT.
