UAB Takes Down UTEP in Game 1

EL PASO- The UAB softball team defeated UTEP today 4-2 in El Paso. The Blazers got nine hits as a team, and Sarah Cespedes pitched a complete game.
Bella Wiggins started things off for the Blazers (23-23, 11-10) with a leadoff single at the top of the first. Wiggins later gave UAB a 1-0 lead when Sierra Frazier brought her home with an RBI double. UTEP (15-32, 5-17) tied the game in the bottom of the first with an RBI double. At the top of the second, UAB reclaimed the lead when Lindsey Smith scored on a fielders choice. Olivia Valbak was credited with an RBI on the play.
After the Miners left a runner on base in the bottom of the second, the game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning. It was then that Lindsey Smith crushed her third home run of the season, scoring herself as well as Lilly Crowe. UTEP went three up, three down in the bottom of the sixth. After UAB left two runners on base in the seventh, the Miners had one final chance to score, and did so with an RBI groundout. However, the Blazers prevented any further scoring, and the game came to an end with a final score of 4-2 in favor of UAB.
Sarah Cespedes (10-7) pitched all seven innings, and collected four strikeouts.
Game 2 versus UTEP will begin tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. MT.
