BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team fell one game short of a weekend sweep as Marshall earned a 7-5 win over the Blazers in Sunday's series finale at Young Memorial Field.
Marshall (13-14-1, 3-6 C-USA) posted back-to-back two-run innings in the fifth and sixth frames to turn a 2-2 tie into a 6-2 lead for the Thundering Herd. The Herd would then hold on in the game's final inning to avoid a weekend sweep in Birmingham.
Blazer first baseman Josh Sears blasted his team-high eighth home run of the season with a two-run blast to center field in the fourth inning, tying the game at 2-2. Sears' homer came right after Brandon Willoughby singled to right field with one out in the inning.
Marshall stretched its lead back to a pair of runs when the Thundering Herd capitalized on a dropped fly ball to open the fifth. Cole Williams and Travis Sankovich would take advantage of UAB's mistake with a pair of sacrifice flies, pushing across a pair of unearned runs to take a 4-2 lead. Leadoff batter Luke Edwards then recorded a two-run homer with two outs in the sixth, giving Marshall its largest lead of the game at 6-2.
The Blazers (19-8, 5-4 C-USA) would trim Marshall's lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh when Logan Braunschweig brought home Caleb Floyd with an RBI groundout. Marshall answered the following frame when Edwards knocked in his fourth run of the game on an RBI fielder's choice to make it 7-3 in the eighth.
UAB put pressure on the Thundering Herd in the bottom of the ninth, plating a pair of runs with the bases loaded when Darryl Buggs reached base via an error on the first baseman. Reliever Cole Agemy, however, would seal the win when shortstop Geordon Blanton made a strong throw from behind second base to beat a sliding John Marc Mullins at first base, stranding the potential tying runs on first and second.
UAB starter Brooks Walton (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season. The Blazers held a perfect 6-0 record this season when the right-hander toed the rubber.
The Blazers will conclude their homestand when UAB hosts in-state rival Auburn on Tuesday at Regions Field. Tuesday's first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
