UAB Shows Out at Spring Invite
4/2/2022 6:31:00 PM | Women's Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM- The UAB track and field team turned in a signature performance at the UAB Spring Invite, hosted on campus at UAB. The Blazers won several events, and placed first overall in the women's category. Nia Hill, (High Jump) Makiyah Sills (100m Hurdles), Karlien Botha (Discus), Birthe Franck-Petersen (Hammer Throw), and Anna Massa (Pole Vault) all took first place in their respective events. UAB did particularly well in the pole vault, with a Blazer in first, second, third, and fourth place. Massa's pole vault was a facility record, and tied for the lead in Conference USA. (4.20m).
Head coach Kurt Thomas said, "We had a lot of event wins this weekend and so many season bests and PRs. Zoria Miller threw the shot put so well, and so did Karlien in the discus. Makiyah hurdled well and keeps getting better. We had several girls run the 200m and keep adding to their speed and fitness for later in the season. I'm proud of them, and we'll keep working to get better week by week. We're looking forward to the Heptathletes competing next Thursday and Friday and hosting another great meet next weekend. The officials and workers did a great job putting on an excellent meet."
Olympic athlete Christine Mboma also competed at the meet. Mboma's times in the 100m dash and 200m dash are currently the fastest in the world this year.
UAB will host the Green and Gold Invite and Multi next weekend, at the UAB Track and Field Complex.
