UAB Softball Falls in Extra Innings to Georgia Tech

BIRMINGHAM- UAB softball dropped a close extra inning game versus Georgia Tech on Wednesday night. The Blazers (21-16, 9-3) took an early lead and nearly came away with the win, but untimely errors and a late scoring run by Georgia Tech proved to be the difference in the game.
After Georgia Tech (28-12, 8-10) left a runner stranded on base in the top of the first inning, UAB took a 2-0 lead on a Jolie Readeaux RBI single that scored Tyler Armistead, and a Lilly Crowe RBI double that brought home Faith Hegh. For the next three innings, the game was a pitcher's duel, with neither team able to get on base. Georgia Tech loaded the bases in the top of the fifth, but relief pitcher Olivia Valbak got the last batter out swinging to end the scoring opportunity.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the top of the sixth inning, when a Blazer fielding error allowed a runner to get home and make the UAB lead 2-1. After UAB got on base but couldn't score in the bottom of the sixth, Georgia Tech took the lead on a 2 RBI double that put the Yellow Jackets up by one heading into the bottom of the seventh.
UAB responded, tying the game on a fielder's choice that allowed Lindsey Smith to score. In the top of the 8th, Georgia Tech retook the lead on an inside the park home run that put the Yellow Jackets up by two. UAB had one last chance to score in the bottom of the eighth, but went three up, three down to end the game with a final score of 5-3.
Olivia Valbak (3-7) was given the pitching loss. She recorded three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.
Lilly Crowe and Lindsey Smith each hit a double. Tyler Armistead celebrated her birthday and hit a single to go with a stolen base.
UAB will host UTSA for a three-game series this weekend at Mary Bowers Field. First pitch of game 1 is set for 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
