Softball Drops Doubleheader Versus UTSA

BIRMINGHAM- The UAB softball team suffered two setbacks today in a doubleheader versus UTSA.
GAME 1
The first game of the afternoon began with three scoreless innings, before UTSA (14-23, 7-7) took an early lead on a solo home run that put the Roadrunners up 1-0 in the top of the fourth. After the Blazers (21-18, 9-5) got two on base but couldn't bring them home, the two teams were unable to score in the fifth or sixth innings.
UTSA added to its lead in the top of the 7th, with an RBI double, and a 2 RBI double that stretched their lead to 4-0. The Blazers got on base with singles from Alyssa Aguilar and Olivia Valbak, but couldn't get home, and the game ended 4-0. Sarah Cespedes (9-4) was given the loss, after recording five strikeouts in four innings of work.
GAME 2
The second game of the day began with UTSA taking an early lead on a two-run homer at the top of the first inning. After neither squad was able to get runs on the board in the second or third inning, UAB got its first run of the weekend when Sierra Frazier smashed a solo home run to left field that put the Blazers within one. After UTSA went three up, three down in the top of the fifth, UAB left a runner on base in the bottom of the fifth. At the top of the sixth, UTSA got a runner on base, but the Blazers made an impressive double play to keep the score at 2-1.
UAB tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a Jolie Readeaux double that brought home Tyler Armistead. UTSA retook the lead at the top of the seventh, with a sac fly that put the Roadrunners up by one. UAB had one last chance to get on the board in the seventh, but went three up, three down to end the game with a final score of 3-2. Makenna Pierce (5-4) was on the hook for the loss in the circle, after striking out three batters in six innings.
UAB will have another shot at UTSA tomorrow, at 6:00 p.m.
