UAB Travels to Mississippi State for Matchup Against Defending National Champions

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team will travel to Starkville, Mississippi, to take on defending national champion Mississippi State on Tuesday night. Tuesday's first pitch at Dudy Noble Field is set for 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
The Blazers (21-10, 7-5 C-USA) enter Tuesday's midweek matchup after winning their third Conference USA series of the season, securing wins on Friday and Saturday in Boca Raton, Florida, to earn a series victory over Florida Atlantic. UAB has won seven of its first eight weekend series to open the 2022 season and is 3-1 in C-USA series in head coach Casey Dunn's first campaign with the Green and Gold.
UAB will send sophomore right-hander Leo Harris to the mound for Tuesday night's matchup in Starkville. Harris (1-1) holds a 4.76 ERA with nine strikeouts in 11.1 innings pitched, earning his first win of the year against Birmingham-Southern in the Rickwood College Classic.
In Boca Raton, the Blazers recorded a pair of close victories to earn the series win over the Owls. Caleb Floyd led the way for UAB at the plate, going 7-of-15 (.466) this past week with two home runs and nine RBI. Floyd drove in all four of UAB's runs in the Blazers' 4-3 win on Friday before going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in UAB's 8-6 win on Saturday.
Collin Taylor, Conference USA's leader with eight saves this season, slammed the door in UAB's pair of league victories this past weekend. Taylor holds a 1.26 ERA this season with a 0.70 WHIP, allowing opposing batters to hit just .143 off him in 13 appearances.
Christian Hall continues to lead the Blazers in batting average (.406), OPS (1.123), hits (43), total bases (69) and slugging percentage (.561). Hall has reached base in 23 straight games, hitting safely in 11 straight contests for the Blazers.
UAB pitching ranks third in Conference USA with a 4.13 ERA as a team, leading the C-USA with 12 saves. The Blazers are 10-3 in one-run games in 2022.
Mississippi State (18-15, 4-8 SEC) is coming off three straight defeats to No. 15 LSU this past weekend at Dudy Noble Field. Three Bulldogs – RJ Yeager, Kellum Clark and Hunter Hines – have hammered a team-high nine home runs this season. Yeager also leads Mississippi State with a .317 batting average and a .634 slugging percentage. On the mound, the Bulldogs hold a 5.25 team ERA with 365 total strikeouts compared to 146 walks this season.
Following Tuesday's midweek matchup in Starkville, the Blazers will return to Birmingham to host defending Conference USA Tournament champion Old Dominion (22-8, 6-6 C-USA) at Young Memorial Field. This weekend's series against the Monarchs will begin on Thursday at 6 p.m.
