BIRMINGHAM – Dominant pitching and timely offense helped the UAB baseball team extend its winning streak to four straight games, notching a 2-1 victory over Marshall in Friday's series opener at Young Memorial Field.
After starter Jackson Reynolds allowed just one run over six innings, the UAB bullpen slammed the door with three scoreless innings of relief. The Blazers' trio of Thomas Ballard, Carson Myers and Collin Taylor combined to pitch three hitless innings with Ballard earning his fourth win of the season and Taylor tallying his team-high fifth save of the year.
Marshall (12-13-1, 2-5 C-USA) scored its first and only run of Friday's game in the fourth inning, taking a 1-0 lead when Daniel Carinci drove in Travis Sankovich via a fielder's choice RBI. Reynolds would then face the minimum in the fifth before UAB tied the game following a wild pitch and a throwing error on Marshall catcher Ryan Leitch. Logan Braunschweig, who led off the inning with an infield single, came around all the way from second to make it a 1-1 game.
Ballard would toss a scoreless frame in the seventh before the Blazers would take the lead for good in the seventh, loading the bases with a pair of singles, a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk. Three-hole batter Josh Sears would then drive a deep fly ball to right field for a sacrifice fly, scoring Braunschweig for the winning run.
Myers and Taylor would then make quick work of Marshall batters in the eighth and ninth, facing the minimum in the final two frames. Taylor ended the game with a strikeout, capping of a 1-2-3 inning in relief.
Defensively, the Blazers turned three double plays to keep the Thundering Herd off the scoreboard, including a 5-4-3 double play in the eighth inning to maintain their one-run advantage after a run scored in the bottom of the seventh.
With the win, UAB (18-7, 4-3 C-USA) also tied its win total from the 2021 season, highlighting the turnaround head coach Casey Dunn has made in his first year with the Blazers.
UAB will continue this weekend's series on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Atlanta Braves World Series Trophy Tour will also be in town for Saturday's game against Marshall. Fans who purchase tickets to Saturday's game at Young Memorial Field will be able to see the World Series trophy on display from 1-4 p.m. Gates open at 1 p.m. to the general public on Saturday.
