UAB Finishes Green and Gold Classic Undefeated, Shuts Out Harvard
3/6/2022 5:02:00 PM | Softball
BIRMINGHAM- UAB defeated Harvard today, secured its third straight shutout, and finished the Green and Gold Classic at a perfect 5-0.
"Very good effort by our entire team." Said Head Coach Joe Guthrie. "We are looking forward to conference play. Our second phase of the season begins this week."
The first inning saw the Blazers (12-9) deny the Harvard (4-5) offense, despite the fact that at one point the bases were loaded, and take a 1-0 lead. Tyler Armistead and Faith Hegh walked, and then Lilly Crowe brought Armistead home on an RBI single.
Harvard went three up, three down at the top of the second, and when the Blazers got to bat, they scored in a hurry. Tyler Armistead brought Sophie Page home on a sac-fly to left field, Faith Hegh was given an RBI on a double, Makenzie Droddy got Bella Wiggins home on an RBI single, and Hegh crossed home plate on an error by the Crimson. The Blazers went up 5-0, and that mark eventually became the final score. For the remainder of the game, the Crimson defense didn't allow any Blazer runs, despite several close attempts from UAB.
In the bottom of the fourth, UAB recorded three hits and got two runners on base, but couldn't bring them home. Neither team could get anything going hitting the ball, and in the top of the seventh inning, Harvard had one final chance to score, but UAB refused to yield, and the Harvard batters went three up, three down, and the game ended with a final score of 5-0 in favor of UAB.
Sarah Cespedes (6-1) pitched the first four innings and was given the win. She faced 13 batters, and allowed only two hits. Bailey Tindell came in relief, and pitched the final three innings, and did not allow any hits. The Blazers recorded 11 hits as a team.
UAB will face Samford University Tuesday night in Homewood, Alabama, at 6:00 p.m.
