BIRMINGHAM- The UAB softball team took care of business today versus Longwood and Harvard, collecting a pair of shutouts.
GAME 1: UAB 2, Longwood 0
The Blazer's first matchup of the day was a tightly contested game the entire way. UAB (11-9) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st on an error by Longwood (6-12), and kept the Lancers off the scoreboard for the rest of the game. In the bottom of the third, UAB scored again when Tyler Armistead crossed home plate on an RBI single by Sierra Frazier. The fourth, fifth and sixth inning featured no scoring, as both offenses slowed to a halt. Holding a 2-0 lead, the Blazers got some hits, but weren't able to bring anyone home. In the 7th inning, Longwood was threatening to score, after two singles in a row put two Lancers on base. The Blazer defense stood its ground, with Sarah Cespedes entering in relief at pitcher and striking out the final Longwood batter to secure the win for UAB.
Olivia Valbak (1-3) pitched the first six innings, facing 21 batters, striking out two batters, and did not allow a hit until the top of the sixth inning.
GAME 2: UAB 6, Harvard 0
The second game of the day was a pitcher's duel for most of the contest, until the Blazer bats caught fire in the bottom of the sixth. The first four innings were a defensive stalemate, with neither team able to get a runner home. UAB got on base in the sixth inning via a single from Bella Wiggins, but Wiggins was caught stealing at second and the 5th inning came to a close with the score still tied at 0-0. Harvard (3-4) got on base with a double, but the Blazers made a clutch defensive stand to end the Crimson's turn at bat.
In the bottom of the sixth, UAB's offense ignited, and orchestrated one of their best displays of hitting so far on the season. Alyssa Aguilar got things started with a one RBI single, and then Makenzie Droddy brought Tyler Armistead in when she was walked. With the bases loaded, Sophie Page brought two runners in with a single. Bella Wiggins recorded a single which brought Page and Droddy home. During the 6th inning, UAB tallied six runs, and five hits. Harvard had one final shot to put runs on the board in the seventh, but the Blazer defense didn't allow a hit, and ended the game with the final score of 6-0.
Lauren Brock stole a base, and Faith Hegh stole two bases. Makenna Pierce (3-2) was credited with the win, facing 22 batters over six innings of work, striking out six of them, and allowing no runs.
UAB will face Harvard again tomorrow, at 12:30 p.m. Tomorrow's game is a part of Sunday Funday, where fans 17 and under get in free with the purchase of an adult ticket, and after the final game, fans in the sixth grade and below can run the bases.
