UAB Rifle Set to Compete in 2022 SoCon Championships

BIRMINGHAM – Winners of two of the past three Southern Conference Championships, the UAB rifle team travels to Lexington, Virginia, for the 2022 SoCon Championships. This weekend's championships will be held at VMI's Kilbourne Hall.
UAB's shooters will compete in the smallbore on Saturday before finishing the weekend with the air rifle discipline on Sunday. Saturday's competition begins at 7 a.m. CT, while Sunday's air rifle competition begins at 6:45 a.m. CT. Live results will be available on the SoCon's Championship Central page.
The Blazers will face a strong field of SoCon foes, including No. 17 North Georgia, No. 18 Georgia Southern and No. 19 Citadel. The Blazers (4-3) finished fourth in the regular season SoCon standings behind the SoCon's three ranked schools listed above.
Amy Kohan, who has led the Blazers in both disciplines the past five matches, ranks second in the SoCon in individual smallbore average at 570.3. Kohan's aggregate average of 1,152.7 ranks third in the Southern Conference.
UAB placed third at this past season's SoCon Championships behind champions North Georgia and runner-up Georgia Southern. UAB finished just 27 points shy of North Georgia's first-place score of 4,600.
Kohan placed second in both disciplines in the 2021 SoCon Championships, while Sophia Flores placed in the top 15 in the smallbore with a score of 561. Flores also placed 11th in the air rifle with a score of 579, while Maggie Vonderau and Jordan Blankenship tied for 12th in the discipline with a score of 576.
Georgia Southern (6-0 SoCon) enters this weekend's championships with an undefeated conference record and the league's top aggregate average (4,606.15).
