UAB Sweeps Doubleheader versus Longwood on Day 1 of Green and Gold Classic

BIRMINGHAM- The UAB softball team opened the Green and Gold Classic with a doubleheader sweep of Longwood by scores of 8-3 and 7-3.
GAME 1: UAB 8, Longwood 3
The Blazers (9-9) scored 8 unanswered runs after Longwood (5-11) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Faith Hegh got the party started with a triple to left field that gave the Blazers a 2-1 advantage and in the bottom of the third, Lilly Crowe scored with a three-run homer to extend the lead to 5-1.
A series of Lancer errors added 2 more runs for the Blazers in the bottom of the fourth, and then Bella Wiggins brought Olivia Valbak home on the eighth and final run of the game for the Blazers with a sacrifice fly.
In the fifth inning, the Lancers managed to get two runs on the board before Bailey Tindell came on in relief to shut down Longwood the rest of the way.
Makenna Pierce (2-2) got the start in the circle for the Blazers and picked up the win.
Faith Hegh recorded a triple, Lilly Crowe recorded a three run home run. Makenna Pierce struck out four batters in four innings, Bailey Tindell collected three strikeouts in three innings.
GAME 2: UAB 7, Longwood 3
The Blazers wasted no time in jumping out to a lead, scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the first. A double by Bella Wiggins and back-to-back walks by Tyler Armistead and Sierra Frazier allowed the Blazers to load the bases with 1 out.
Back-to-back throwing errors by the Lancers gave UAB a 4-0 lead. Lindsey Smith added an RBI via sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.
In the third inning, the Blazers loaded the bases again thanks to walks by Lily Crowe and Jolie Readeaux, and a single by Faith Hegh. A sac fly from Smith and a 2 RBI single from Sophie Page brought the score to 7-0.
In the fifth inning, the Lancers rallied for 3 runs via RBI, but Olivia Valbak came in to pitch in relief and stranded the Lancer runner on second base to end the inning.
Down 7-3, the Lancers had one last shot to get back in the game, but the Blazer defense stood its ground and ended the game.
Sarah Cespedes (5-1) got the start in the circle for the Blazers and picked up the win. She collected three strikeouts over four innings of work, facing 20 batters. Bella Wiggins, Lilly Crowe, and Faith Hegh all recorded doubles.
UAB will face Longwood again tomorrow at 1:30 p.m., and then has a game against Harvard set for 4:00 p.m.
