STARKVILLE- The UAB track and field team had an outstanding showing this weekend at the Al Schmidt Bulldog relays, hosted by Mississippi State. UAB won four events in total and set two freshman records.
DAY 1-
On the first day of competition, the Blazers won the 3000m steeplechase, and the 4x200m relays. UAB dominated the 4x200m, winning both first and second place.
Alayah Dozier, Kat Duren, Sydney Taylor, and Lisa Petkov were on the first-place team, and Kaylie Wright, Ebony Tolliver, Makiyah Sills, and Maira Gauges took home second. "We had a very solid day," said Head Coach Kurt Thomas. "Everyone showed up in a competitive mood and we got many top performances and a few event wins. Karlien threw the discus well. Shauntia Landrum continued to triple jump well. Britney Johnson had a great season opening steeple and was just off her PR. The 4x200m got a win and everyone sprinted well. Laura Thompson raced the 5k well and set herself up well for the rest of her season. We have another big day tomorrow to continue this momentum." UAB had six top 8 finishes on the day.
DAY 2-
On the second day of the meet, UAB won two more events, in the 100m hurdles, and the pole vault. Kat Duren placed first in the 100m, and Anna Massa cleared 4.15m to place first in the meet. Duren's time in the 100m is currently 1st in Conference USA, and 3rd all time in school history. Trinity Fellows tied a freshman record in the pole vault. A team of Makiyah Sills, Ebony Tolliver, Kat Duren, and Alayah Dozier placed second in the 4x100m relay. Nine different Blazers set PRs.
"We had a pretty good weekend," said Coach Thomas. "We always want to show up to a meet to be one of the better teams all around and I feel like we did that this weekend. Lots more PRs, a few freshman records, event wins, season opening bests, and just great competing efforts. We are happy but not satisfied. We'll get back to work this week and prepare to compete at home next weekend."
UAB will host the UAB Spring Invitational next weekend, on April 1 and 2.
