BIRMINGHAM- UAB track and field will be heading to Starkville, MS this weekend to compete in the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays hosted by Mississippi State.
The last time out, UAB competed in the Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta. At that meet, 18 Blazers recorded top 10 finishes, including five top-5 finishes.
"We're looking for our athletes to come off of the first weekend of outdoor competition and another week of training, ready to improve in each event area." Said head coach Kurt Thomas. "All the distance runners will open up after training through last weekend. We've worked on adapting to the newer outdoor events like the 100m hurdles, 4x100m, steeplechase, Hammer throw, etc. Mississippi State always has treated us well and it should give us another opportunity to compete at a high level. Birthe Franck-Petersen and the hammer throwers will throw Thursday and get us started. We are looking forward to seeing Karlien Botha throw the discus Friday. Nia Hill and Olivia Beard will high jump Friday, and Britney Johnson will run the steeplechase Friday night. The 4x2 relay will be fun for those ladies to sprint and compete against each other, and of course we'll get to see the 5k ladies let it rip in their first outdoor 5k of the season. Friday is another day of executing in the pole vault, 4x1 relay, long jump, javelin, shot put and running events. We're in a good place and I'm excited to see what they accomplish."
