TUSCALOOSA- The UAB softball team fell to #2 Alabama Wednesday night at Rhoads Stadium.
The Blazers (7-9) held Alabama (16-0) off the scoreboard for the first inning, and stayed in the game early on as both defenses locked up.
Alabama got on the board first in the 2nd inning, with an RBI in the bottom of the first. UAB was unable to respond in the top of the 3rd, despite a triple from Olivia Valbak. For the rest of the 3rd inning, and all of the fourth, neither team scored. The Blazers perfectly executed a double play in the bottom of the fourth, and then grounded out a batter to keep Alabama from bringing anyone home.
With UAB unable to record any hits in the top of the 5th, Alabama took advantage. The Crimson Tide got on base with a double, and then got a runner home on an error. Alabama then plated a runner on a wild pitch, and got two more runners home on an RBI. Finally, the Tide got another RBI to take a 6-0 lead.
The Blazers fought hard to get on the scoreboard at the top of the 6th. Jolie Readeaux got on base with a single to right field, and then Chloe Bahruth came in as a pinch runner. Bahruth eventually advanced to third base, but was narrowly thrown out at home plate. The Blazers then grounded out to end their turn at bat. In the bottom of the sixth, Alabama added an insurance run on an RBI single. UAB had one last chance to score at the top of the 7th, but went three up, three down to end the game, and the final score read 7-0.
Olivia Valbak (0-3) was given the loss, despite a strong performance that saw her record a triple, and strikeout a batter over four innings of work.
The Blazers will host the Green and Gold Classic this weekend at Mary Bowers Field. UAB will face Longwood, and Harvard. Friday's game is Employee Appreciation Day. UAB employees will receive an all-day pass for $2 with a valid OneCard.
