BIRMINGHAM- The UAB softball team captured two wins over Marshall today, in a doubleheader played at Mary Bowers Field.
"Well done by our players today." Said head coach Joe Guthrie. "I am very excited for what they accomplished. Tomorrow is Championship Sunday."
GAME 1: UAB 1, MARSHALL 0
The Blazers (16-10, 4-1) came out on top in a defensive struggle in Game 1, a contest that saw the two teams combine for only six hits, and no runs scored until the bottom of the sixth inning. The two squads weren't able to get anything going in the first inning. Faith Hegh made an outstanding catch in the top of the first to deny a would-be hit for Marshall. Each team pitched well from the circle, and the second, third, fourth and fifth innings went by with nothing happening for either team at bat.
In the top of the sixth, the Thundering Herd (16-8, 0-2) got their bats going and loaded the bases, but the Blazer defense stood its ground, and ended the Marshall scoring opportunity with no runs allowed. In the bottom of the sixth, Lindsey Smith singled to left field, and then advanced to second on an error by the Herd. After Smith stole third, a Bella Wiggins sac-fly brought her home to give UAB the 1-0 lead. Marshall got up to plate with one last chance to get on the board, but went three up, three down to give UAB the victory, and their eighth shutout victory of the season.
Olivia Valbak (2-3) was given the pitching win.
GAME 2: UAB 5, MARSHALL 2
The Blazers started hot to jump out to an early lead, and played well across the board to secure a win in Game 2.
Marshall began the game with a single, but a UAB double play, and a subsequent ground out ended the Herd's first turn at bat. When the Blazers got up to bat in the bottom of the first, they loaded the bases, and Lilly Crowe got a 2 RBI single to bring in Tyler Armistead and Bella Wiggins, and give UAB a 2-0 lead. Marshall answered in the top of the second, with a home run to left field. UAB scored again in the bottom of the second, with a Tyler Armistead single RBI that scored Lindsey Smith. The Thundering Herd responded again in the top of the third, with a single RBI. Marshall had the bases loaded in the top of the third, but Bailey Tindell came in to pitch in relief, and the UAB defense stood firm and didn't allow any further scoring.
UAB scored once again in the bottom of the third, when Jolie Readeaux got an RBI on a sac-fly to center field that scored pinch runner Chloe Bahruth. The game locked up for both teams in the fourth and fifth innings, with neither team able to get anyone home. UAB added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, on a Bella Wiggins sac-fly that brought home Lindsey Smith. Marshall had one last chance to even the score in the top of the seventh, but couldn't get anyone home, as the Blazer defense grounded out the last Herd batter with two runners stranded on base.
Bailey Tindell (2-4) was given the win, after allowing no runs and striking out two batters in 3.1 innings of work. Olivia Valbak was credited with a save. Lindsey Smith hit two doubles in Game 2.
UAB will face Marshall again tomorrow at Mary Bowers Field, with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
